Why Is Your Washing Machine Filling Slowly? Discover the Fix Now!

Writer: Sonia AwamlehSonia Awamleh

If your washing machine is filling too slowly, the issue may be due to #sediment buildup in the water inlet valve screens. You can fix this problem by following these steps:

1. Ensure Water #Valves Are Fully Open

  • Check that both the hot and cold water valves are completely open.

  • Older valves may require turning #counterclockwise until fully open, while newer lever-style valves should be turned 90 degrees to align with the hoses.

2. #Unplug the Washer and Shut Off the Water Supply

  • Disconnect the washing machine from the #power outlet and move it away from the wall.

  • Shut off both the hot and cold water supply valves by turning them clockwise.

3. Disconnect the Water Hoses from the Back of the Washer

  • Label the hot water #hose for easy reinstallation.

  • Place a towel on the floor under the hoses to catch any leaks.

  • Using pliers, loosen the hoses by turning them counterclockwise.

4. Test Water Flow from the Hoses

  • Place the hose ends into a bucket.

  • Open the cold water valve fully for five seconds, then close it.

  • Repeat for the hot water valve.

  • The water should flow strongly and evenly from both hoses. If the flow is weak, a #plumber may be needed to investigate further.

5. Clean the Water Inlet Screens

  • Use a syringe or turkey baster to fill with clean water.

  • Position a #bucket under the washer’s water inlets.

  • Forcefully inject water into the inlet screens using the syringe to dislodge sediment.

  • Gently scrub the screens with an old toothbrush to remove any remaining buildup.

  • Repeat the rinsing process until the screens are completely clean.

6. Reconnect Hoses and Test the Washer

  • Reattach the hot water hose to its designated inlet and tighten it securely.

  • Repeat for the cold water hose.

  • Fully reopen both water supply valves and check for #leaks.

  • Plug the washer back in and push it back into place.

  • Run a test cycle using cold water and another with hot water to confirm the issue is resolved.

If the washing machine still fills too slowly after these steps, the water #inlet #valves may need to be replaced.
